Perth Amboy er en amerikansk by som ligger i Middlesex County i New Jersey. Den har 55 436 innbyggere (2020)[2][3] og dekker et areal på 15,34 km².

Lenapeindianerne kalte stedet der byen ble bygd «Ompoge», som betyr «flat grunn»[4] eller «stående, rank».[5] Byen ble da den ble til i 1683 kalt «New Perth» etter James Drummond, jarlen av Perth. Han æres også med en statue foran rådhuset.[6] Det algonkiske navnet ble korrumpert til Ambo, eller Point Amboy, og så kom kombinasjonen av det lokale og det skotske. Også i bynavnet South Amboy går det igjen.[7][8][9]

Skotsk koloni

Skotske kalvinistiske bosettere var de første europeiske immigranter som slo seg til i 1683 i Perth Amboy (først kalt Scottish Colony). De var blitt rekruttert av Robert Barclay, som inviterte dem til å kolonisere denne delen av East Jersey-kolonien. Barclay var kveker, slik som en mindre del av nybyggerne, og han ble senere ikke-bosatt guvernør av provinsen.[10][11]
